Two ‘Feral’ Dogs Chained At Shelter Gates — No One Thought They Could Be Saved

One morning, staff at a shelter on St. Thomas arrived at a familiar yet heartbreaking sight — two thin dogs had been left chained outside their gates overnight.

While abandoned animals were not unusual, these two were different.

The sisters, later named Sofrito and Wasabi, were so fearful that no one could get close to them. They flinched at movement, avoided eye contact and seemed completely shut down.

“They were extremely feral,” one volunteer explained. “You couldn’t handle them at all.”

Due to their extreme fear, the shelter placed them in a secure area—more to prevent panic and escape than for illness.

Everything about their new environment terrified them. Human touch, leashes, and even simple interactions felt overwhelming. At one point, they were too scared to accept food offered directly to them — something most dogs would never refuse.

But the shelter team refused to give up.

With patience and consistency, volunteers began working with the sisters little by little. Progress was slow, marked by small, quiet victories — a step forward or a brief moment of trust.

“They had to learn how to be dogs,” a volunteer shared. “How to play, how to feel safe.”

Unexpectedly, one simple joy broke through their wall of fear: bubbles. As they leapt and chased, an undeniable spark of wonder and play emerged—their eyes brightening, their bodies finally moving with pure, unguarded happiness.

That spark marked the beginning of a new chapter.

A few months later, the sisters were flown off the island through a rescue program and arrived at a sanctuary in Maine.

For Sofrito — later renamed June — life began to change almost immediately.

After losing her previous dog, Sarah found June online. Something about her stood out.

When Sarah and her partner met June, she was still shy but displayed a gentle sweetness that stood out.

They decided to give her a home.

At first, June struggled to adjust. Outside, she showed glimpses of freedom and joy, but indoors, she remained cautious, often retreating to a small safe space near the door.

Her new family gave her time — speaking softly, avoiding sudden movements and letting her set the pace.

Weeks of gentle patience passed before June finally gathered the courage to leave her small refuge and curl into her family’s arms on the couch. In that brave moment, she began to rediscover joy and connection.

Today, June is almost unrecognisable. She spends her days playing, cuddling and discovering the world around her with confidence.

“She’s incredibly loving,” her owner said. “All she wants is to be close to us.”

While June has found her forever home in Maine, her sister Wasabi remains at the sanctuary, still waiting for a family of her own.

Those who know Wasabi believe she has just as much love to give — she simply needs a person willing to look beyond her fear and offer the same opportunity.
