Oreo couldn’t eat or drink, and rescuers knew they were running out of time.
For years, Oreo knew little more than life on the streets of Del Valle, Texas.
The stray dog survived however he could, accepting scraps from people in the neighborhood and searching through discarded trash whenever food became difficult to find.
It was a hard existence, but Oreo had learned how to survive.
Then one ordinary search for something to eat nearly cost him his life.
A few months ago, Oreo discovered a discarded plastic container that had once held cheese balls. Hoping to find something edible inside, he pushed his head into the opening.
But when he tried to pull himself back out, the container wouldn’t come off.
Oreo was trapped.
Unable to see properly and with no way to remove the plastic jug himself, the frightened dog began wandering through the wilderness.
And somehow, he remained that way for days.
He Had Been Trapped For More Than A Week
Eventually, someone spotted Oreo wandering in the woods with the container still covering his head.
Realizing the dog was in serious trouble, the person contacted Jack Jack’s Pack, a nonprofit dog rescue organization.
Rescuers immediately began searching the area.

As they spoke with local residents, the situation became even more alarming.
Neighbors told the team that Oreo had apparently been wandering with the container stuck over his head for more than a week.
That meant he had been unable to properly eat or drink for days.
The container was also making it increasingly difficult for him to breathe.
Oreo’s condition was deteriorating, and rescuers understood that they might not have much time left.
But finding him presented another challenge.
The Search Expanded Into The Woods
Oreo was frightened, disoriented and moving through a large wooded area.
Rescuers needed a way to locate him without driving him even farther away.
That’s when the mission expanded into the sky.
Military drone operator Greg Whiting joined the effort, along with Cameron Woldhagen and Justin Cox from Backcountry Drones.
On the ground, numerous volunteers also helped with the search, including members of Lost Paws Rescue of Texas.
Together, they searched for the dog whose life could depend on being found as quickly as possible.
Eventually, their efforts paid off.
Oreo was located.
But rescuers still needed to get close enough to safely remove the container.
One Careful Move Finally Set Oreo Free
After spending so long struggling on his own, Oreo was understandably nervous around the people trying to approach him.
The rescue team couldn’t risk frightening him into running away again.
An animal control officer therefore used a tranquilizer dart to safely sedate him.
Once Oreo was calm, rescuers were finally able to reach him.
Then came the moment everyone had been working toward:
The plastic container was removed from his head.
For the first time in more than a week, Oreo’s face was finally visible again.
The dog who had been wandering through the woods unable to properly eat, drink or see was at last safe.

And his rescue marked the beginning of an entirely different life.
Oreo Had To Learn That People Could Be Kind
Jack Jack’s Pack placed Oreo in the care of Meredith, an experienced foster mom who could help him recover and adjust.
For a dog who had spent years surviving outdoors, suddenly living inside a home was a major change.
Everything was unfamiliar.
But Oreo began making progress little by little.
His rescuers said he was gradually learning that the world didn’t always have to be frightening or unforgiving.
Instead of searching through garbage for his next meal, Oreo now had people looking after him.
Instead of wandering alone, he had a safe place where he could finally rest.
And after everything he’d survived, those small comforts represented an enormous change.
The Dog Behind The Jar Finally Got His Second Chance
For more than a week, people who spotted Oreo could barely see the dog underneath the plastic container covering his head.
What they couldn’t see was the sweet black-and-white face hidden inside — or the resilient dog who was still fighting to survive.
It took concerned strangers, rescue organizations, volunteers, drone operators and animal control working together to finally bring his ordeal to an end.
Now, the container that nearly cost Oreo his life is gone.
His days of blindly wandering through the woods searching for help are behind him.
Oreo is still adjusting to his new world, but this time he doesn’t have to face it alone.
After years of surviving on the streets — and seven terrifying days trapped inside a plastic jar — Oreo can finally breathe freely, eat without struggling and discover what it feels like to be safe.
And if his rescuers are right, the best part of his story is only just beginning.
