The Prince of Wales is understood to have considered several television offers before deciding against appearing on screen for the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.
Prince William has reportedly decided not to participate in a television documentary marking 30 years since the death of his mother, Princess Diana, amid concerns that separate projects involving him and Prince Harry could reignite attention on the brothers’ strained relationship.
The significant anniversary falls in August 2027, three decades after Diana died following a car crash in Paris.
William, who was 15 when his mother died, is understood to have carefully considered how publicly he wants to mark the milestone.
According to reports, the Prince of Wales received several approaches about either appearing in or helping create television programming about Diana.
He also reportedly held private discussions at Kensington Palace with BBC Director-General Matt Brittin.
Ultimately, however, William is understood to have chosen not to appear in an anniversary documentary.
William Reportedly Does Not Want Another William Versus Harry Narrative
One factor behind the decision is said to be William’s desire to avoid creating another situation in which he and his younger brother are portrayed as being on opposing sides.
The brothers remain estranged, and reports indicate they have not spoken since around the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.
With Harry potentially considering his own televised tribute to Diana, separate documentaries involving both brothers could inevitably invite comparisons.

William reportedly wants to avoid being placed in that situation.
The subject also remains deeply personal for the Prince of Wales, who is said to still find his mother’s death extremely emotional.
For William, the public tributes surrounding the 20th anniversary in 2017 are understood to have provided an important opportunity to speak openly about Diana and process some of those emotions publicly.
William And Harry Once Remembered Diana Together On Screen
The contrast with the 20th anniversary is striking.
In 2017, William and Harry appeared together in the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life And Legacy.
The programme offered an unusually personal look at their memories of Diana, with both brothers speaking about their childhood and the mother they lost at such young ages.
At the time, William indicated that they were unlikely to speak about her so openly and publicly again.
Nine years later, circumstances between the brothers have changed dramatically.
Their relationship has deteriorated, and despite Harry’s recent return to Britain with Meghan and their children, there has been no confirmed breakthrough between him and William.
That makes the approaching 30th anniversary considerably more complicated than the milestone they marked together in 2017.
Harry Is Reportedly Considering His Own Diana Tribute
While William appears to be stepping away from an on-screen documentary, Harry is understood to be exploring several possibilities for commemorating his mother.
Reports suggest the Duke of Sussex has contacted some of Diana’s friends and relatives about potentially participating in a film connected to the anniversary.
Among those reportedly approached is Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer.
However, Harry’s project has not been formally announced.
A source close to the Duke has said that several ideas have been discussed but that nothing has been finalized, with Harry still considering what he believes would be the most meaningful way to celebrate his mother’s legacy.
One possibility is that a documentary could be developed through Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Productions, which has a first-look arrangement with Netflix for film and television projects.

But at this stage, that remains a possibility rather than a confirmed production.
Diana’s 30th Anniversary Comes At A Sensitive Time For The Brothers
The milestone arrives while William and Harry’s relationship remains under intense public scrutiny.
Harry returned to Britain with Meghan and their family in August after spending six years living in the United States.
Yet his physical return to the UK has not so far resulted in a publicly confirmed reconciliation with his brother.
For William, taking part in a television programme about Diana while Harry potentially develops another tribute could risk shifting attention away from their mother’s legacy and back toward the brothers’ dispute.
Reports suggest this is precisely the kind of comparison William hopes to avoid.
Instead, the Prince of Wales appears likely to choose another way of commemorating his mother.
Kensington Palace has not publicly revealed what that will involve.
When asked how William intends to mark the anniversary, a palace spokesman declined to comment.
Two Brothers, One Powerful Legacy — But Potentially Very Different Tributes
Diana’s influence remains deeply connected to both of her sons.
William and Harry have each spoken over the years about how losing their mother affected their lives, and both have incorporated elements of her legacy into their public work.
They have also commemorated her together in the past.
But the 30th anniversary could look very different.
Harry may ultimately move forward with a television project involving people who knew Diana personally.
William, meanwhile, is reportedly choosing to stay away from anniversary documentaries altogether.
That does not mean the Prince of Wales will allow the milestone to pass without acknowledging his mother.
Rather, the available reports suggest he wants to avoid a situation in which two separate tributes become another public comparison between the brothers.
Nearly three decades after Diana’s death, William and Harry may once again be remembering the same extraordinary figure — but this time, they could do so separately.
