Just weeks after being rescued, Rocky hardly looks like the same dog
When Ashley Buchart first saw Rocky’s photo online, she could immediately tell that the dog had been through an incredibly difficult time.
Rocky had lost much of his fur, appeared painfully thin and weak, and seemed to struggle with his back legs. His condition was so severe that it was difficult to imagine what he might have looked like before his life took such a devastating turn.
But only a few months later, Rocky would undergo a transformation few could have expected.
A Dog Desperately In Need Of Help
Buchart first learned about Rocky while browsing a local Facebook community called The Dogs Need Our Help.
According to information shared by the group, Rocky had been left without proper care after his owner passed away. With no one looking after him, his health gradually deteriorated until a concerned neighbor realized he desperately needed help.

Rocky’s story immediately caught Buchart’s attention.
She wanted to help, but she needed a little time to prepare her home. Fortunately, an experienced foster named Donna stepped in to care for Rocky during his first couple of days.
Mutts N Such Rescue, which partners with Best Friends Animal Society, also became involved and helped provide support for Rocky’s medical care.
Soon afterward, Rocky was ready to begin the next chapter of his life with Buchart.
Finally, A Safe Place To Rest
Considering everything Rocky had experienced, Buchart expected him to be frightened and hesitant when he arrived.
Instead, he seemed almost relieved.
It was around the Fourth of July weekend, and the sound of fireworks understandably made him uneasy. Yet Rocky quickly appeared comfortable around Buchart and entered her home without much resistance.
After finding the bed prepared for him, he settled down and slept.
And he kept sleeping.

Rocky spent much of his first two days resting, almost as though his exhausted body finally understood that he no longer needed to remain constantly alert just to survive.
For perhaps the first time in a long while, he had food, shelter and someone watching over him.
His Health Problems Were More Serious Than They Looked
Rocky still had a difficult recovery ahead.
During his first weeks in foster care, veterinary appointments became a regular part of his routine.
He was suffering from several health problems, including mange, dermatitis, a serious flea allergy and heartworms.
Large areas of his body were nearly hairless, particularly around his belly, sides and hindquarters. He was also dehydrated and underweight, while weakness in his back legs made his condition even more concerning.
But once Rocky began receiving consistent treatment, nutritious food and proper care, something remarkable happened.
He started improving — and faster than Buchart had expected.
The Dog Who Arrived Exhausted Began Acting Like A Puppy
Little by little, Rocky’s coat began returning.
His body became stronger, and his hind legs started regaining their strength.

But perhaps the biggest transformation wasn’t simply visible in his appearance.
His personality began to emerge.
The exhausted dog who had initially wanted little more than sleep started becoming energetic and playful. During walks, Rocky began bursting into excited runs. When something made him happy, he would jump around enthusiastically.
It was a sign that Rocky was no longer simply trying to make it through another day.
He was beginning to enjoy being a dog again.
The change was especially meaningful to Buchart because she could see him gradually leaving behind the survival-focused behavior he had shown when he first arrived.
Rocky was finally discovering what it felt like to play, explore and feel safe.
A Temporary Foster Becomes His Forever Home
Originally, Buchart hadn’t planned on permanently adopting Rocky.
Her intention was simply to foster him while he recovered and eventually help him move on to a permanent family.
That plan didn’t last very long.
After spending only a few weeks together, Buchart realized that Rocky had already found the home where he belonged.
She had become deeply attached to him and couldn’t picture sending him somewhere else.

Rocky was no longer simply a foster dog.
He was family.
A Transformation That’s Hard To Believe
Only about two months after his rescue, Rocky looked dramatically different from the fragile dog first seen online.
His fur had returned, his body had become healthier and stronger, and his playful personality was finally shining through.
Looking at Rocky now, someone unfamiliar with his story might struggle to believe that he was the same dog who had once been severely underweight, nearly hairless and struggling to stand strongly on his back legs.
For Buchart, Rocky’s recovery demonstrates just how dramatically an animal’s life can change when people come together to help.
A concerned neighbor noticed him. A community helped spread his story. Foster caregivers provided safety. Rescue organizations supported his treatment. And eventually, Rocky found someone who decided she never wanted to let him go.
What began as the story of a neglected dog fighting to survive ultimately became something entirely different:
The story of a dog getting his life back — and finding the family he had been waiting for.
