For nearly her entire life, an elephant named Somboon knew only work.
Taken from the wild as a baby, she spent about 80 years being used in logging and tourism, carrying heavy burdens and giving rides to visitors day after day. Rest was never truly part of her life.
By the time rescuers learned about her condition, Somboon was elderly, exhausted and in desperate need of help.
That’s when Save Elephant Foundation stepped in to change her future.
The rescue team arranged for Somboon to be moved to Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary where she could finally live in peace rather than be forced to work.
When she arrived, the signs of her difficult past were impossible to miss. She was underweight, had damaged skin and was missing several teeth. But despite everything she had endured, rescuers sensed something remarkable — she seemed to understand that she was finally safe.
Many rescued elephants take days or even weeks before they feel comfortable enough to lie down and sleep, often because years of stress leave them fearful and anxious.
But Somboon was different.
Almost immediately after arriving, she walked toward a pile of soft sand prepared for her and gently lowered herself onto the ground. Surrounded by unfamiliar sounds and people, she fell asleep peacefully.
For perhaps the first time in decades, she was finally able to truly rest.
After waking up from her deep sleep, Somboon struggled to stand again due to weakness and age. Caretakers quickly rushed to help her back onto her feet and have continued monitoring her closely ever since.
Now, Somboon is slowly adjusting to life in the sanctuary. She spends her days eating healthy meals, enjoying mud baths and taking gentle walks — experiences that rescuers say she should have been able to enjoy all along.
Though her recovery journey is far from over, one thing is certain:
After a lifetime of hardship, Somboon is finally living the peaceful life she deserved from the beginning.
