A trip to an animal shelter unexpectedly changed the life of an elderly dog who seemed to have nowhere left to turn.
Chrissy, who works with Forgotten Now Family Rescue, had arrived at a local shelter to pick up several dogs when something in the corner of the lobby caught her attention.
An extremely old dog was standing close to his owner, pressing himself against the person’s leg as though it were the only safe place he knew.

The dog was frightened and in terrible condition. His coat showed signs of a serious flea problem, and an untreated infection had become so severe that the odor could be noticed throughout the lobby.
Then Chrissy discovered why he had been brought there.
His owner intended to have him euthanized.

Chrissy looked at the senior dog’s face and felt she couldn’t simply leave knowing what was about to happen. Although he was clearly old and sick, she saw an animal who still seemed to have some fight left in him.
She decided to intervene.
Instead of spending his final moments alone at the shelter, the dog would leave with her.
She named him Seymour.
A Little Kindness Changed Everything
Seymour was around 18 years old and appeared unfamiliar with the affection he suddenly began receiving.
When Chrissy gently touched and comforted him, he seemed almost confused by the attention. For a dog who had experienced so much neglect, being treated with tenderness was something entirely new.
Because of Seymour’s advanced age and health problems, Chrissy initially accepted him as a hospice foster.
She took him for veterinary treatment, where his numerous medical issues could be evaluated. He had infections as well as growths and masses that needed attention.

At that point, the goal was simple: whatever time Seymour had left should be comfortable.
Nobody expected that time to be very long.
Even if he had only a few peaceful days remaining, Chrissy believed saving him had been worthwhile.
But Seymour surprised everyone.
Days Turned Into Months
Instead of rapidly declining, Seymour began settling into his new life.
Days passed.
Then weeks.
Then months.
The dog who had arrived at the shelter seemingly facing the end of his life continued going strong for more than 13 months after his rescue.

With proper care and a safe home, another side of Seymour began to emerge.
He was gentle, loving and eager to make friends. Despite the hardship he’d experienced, he hadn’t lost his ability to trust people or show affection.
Within just 24 hours, his entire world had changed.
He went from being an elderly, neglected dog whose future appeared to have run out to a deeply loved member of Chrissy’s family.
Finally Knowing What It Means To Be Loved
More than a year after that chance encounter at the shelter, Chrissy continued to treasure every day she had with Seymour.
No one could change the difficult experiences he’d already endured.
But they could change what came next.
Instead of spending the final chapter of his life unwanted and alone, Seymour was surrounded by people who considered him family.
And perhaps the most remarkable part of his story is that Chrissy hadn’t gone to the shelter looking for him that day.
She simply happened to be there when he needed someone most.
Seymour may have arrived at the shelter believing his life was ending — but one person’s decision to give him a chance turned his final chapter into the one filled with the most love.
