Among piles of garbage beside a busy bus station in Cartagena, Colombia, two tiny puppies lay curled up together.
Barely a month old, they had no mother, no shelter, and no one looking after them. Surrounded by discarded plastic and paper, the frightened siblings seemed to have accepted the trash pile as the only place they had left to rest.

A passerby noticed something unusual while walking near the overflowing dumpster. At first, he thought it was simply more rubbish. But as he moved closer, he realized two helpless puppies were lying there.
Seeing how weak they looked, he immediately contacted Isla Animal, a local rescue organization.
Within a short time, founder Lina Patiño and fellow rescuer Jennifer Ponsford arrived at the scene. Knowing the intense heat could quickly become fatal, they carefully picked up the puppies and rushed them to the rescue center.

The little dogs were in heartbreaking condition.
Their bodies were covered with ticks, their swollen bellies suggested heavy parasite infections, and severe malnutrition had left them exhausted.
Despite how critical their condition was, the rescuers refused to lose hope.

The puppies were given fresh food, clean water, parasite treatment, and medication to remove the ticks. During the first day, they were so weak and unresponsive that the team feared they might not survive.
But the tiny fighters weren’t ready to give up.
After only a few days of proper care, they slowly began showing signs of recovery. Their energy returned, their eyes became brighter, and medicated baths helped heal their irritated skin.
The rescuers named the brothers Enrique and Beto.
Today, the two puppies are almost unrecognizable from the frightened babies found in the garbage.

Free from parasites and receiving the nutrition they desperately needed, they spend their days eating well, playing together, and curling up side by side for naps.
They still need to grow a little more and receive their puppy vaccinations before they can be adopted, but their future is now filled with hope instead of uncertainty.
The rescuers believe the brothers survived because kindness arrived just when they needed it most.
Sometimes, all it takes to change a life forever is one person who chooses not to walk away.
