A small dog named Darby has spent months waiting for someone to finally choose him.
Last year, Paw Squad 559 agreed to take Darby in after an overcrowded shelter struggled to find him a home. At first, rescuers were confused. A tiny 2-year-old dog weighing only a few pounds would usually attract attention quickly.
But after veterinary examinations, they discovered why Darby looked and moved differently from other dogs.

X-rays revealed that his kneecaps were fused, a condition that affects the way he walks and stands. While the issue doesn’t prevent him from living a happy life, it makes his appearance unusual enough that many potential adopters immediately overlook him.
According to his foster family, Darby receives little to no interest at adoption events. In some cases, visitors have even ignored him entirely, focusing instead on the other dogs nearby.

For those who know him personally, the rejection is heartbreaking — especially because Darby’s personality is the complete opposite of what people assume at first glance.
Behind his unusual walk is a playful, affectionate little dog who adores being around people and other animals. He loves racing around excitedly, playing with toys and spending time close to his foster mom.
One of his favourite things in the world is riding around inside a purse, where he happily curls up and watches everything around him.

But after being repeatedly passed over, rescuers have noticed a change in him. Darby has started approaching people less and less during adoption events, almost as if he’s beginning to expect rejection before anyone even gives him a chance.
Despite his condition, Darby requires very little special care. He simply needs a safe home without hazards like stairs or a swimming pool.
Rescuers believe he would thrive with almost any loving family willing to look past appearances and see the sweet dog underneath.
All Darby really wants is what every rescue animal hopes for — someone who chooses him and never lets him feel unwanted again.
