At a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa, two orphaned baby animals from completely different species formed an unexpected friendship that changed both of their lives.
A newborn rhino calf named Daisy was discovered alone in Kruger National Park shortly after birth. She was extremely weak and struggling to survive, so rescuers rushed her by helicopter to the intensive care unit at Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary.
Because Daisy was only a few hours old, she needed constant attention, bottle feedings and special medical care to help stabilize her condition and keep her warm.

Around the same time, another fragile baby animal arrived at the sanctuary — a young zebra later named Modjadji.
The tiny zebra had been found collapsed and barely breathing after severe storms swept through the reserve. Rescuers believed she was only about a week old when she was brought in for emergency treatment.
As the two babies slowly regained strength, they began spending more time near each other inside the sanctuary.

Before long, the rhino calf and zebra became inseparable.
Caregivers noticed that the two young animals constantly followed one another around and seemed to bring each other comfort during recovery. At night, they would even sleep curled up side by side.
For Daisy especially, the companionship made a huge difference. Rhinos are naturally social animals, and having Modjadji nearby helped the lonely calf feel calmer and safer while recovering.
Rescuers also explained that the bond between the two babies reduced Daisy’s dependence on human caretakers, allowing her to form healthier natural behaviors while still receiving the emotional support she needed.

Over time, their friendship grew stronger and stronger, with the zebra acting almost like a protective sister to the baby rhino.
Although one day both animals will hopefully return to larger groups of their own species, for now they seem perfectly happy simply having each other.
Their unlikely bond has become a touching reminder that comfort, healing and friendship can sometimes appear in the most unexpected ways.
