On a rainy day in the seaside town of Gorleston, England, a mail carrier heading toward a house for a routine delivery suddenly found his path completely blocked by an unexpected visitor.
Sitting directly in front of the doorway was a tiny baby seal.
The little pup looked exhausted, confused and completely out of place. Covered in fluffy white fur, she was clearly very young — likely only a week or two old.
Concerned for the animal’s safety, the postman quickly contacted Marine and Wildlife Rescue for help.
Rescuers later learned the seal had actually been spotted the previous day trying to crawl underneath parked cars nearby, but teams had been unable to safely locate her before she disappeared again.
This time, thanks to the postman’s quick call, rescuers arrived before the tiny seal wandered away.
According to wildlife responders, the pup appeared severely underweight and had a small puncture wound, likely caused after being separated from her mother during rough weather and dangerous tides.
Because baby grey seals are not supposed to enter the ocean before losing their white fur, rescuers suspected the pup may have been swept away too early during storms.
The tiny seal was carefully transported to RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre for treatment and rehabilitation.
Rescuers later gave the determined little seal the name “Cold Call” — a playful reference to the way she unexpectedly appeared at someone’s doorstep asking for help.
Since arriving at the rescue center, Cold Call has been steadily recovering. Caregivers say she’s gaining weight, making new seal friends and learning important survival skills, including how to feed independently.
Despite her difficult start, the pup has already developed a strong personality.
Rescuers describe her as feisty, loud and full of attitude — all signs that she’s growing stronger every day.
Over the next few months, Cold Call will continue rehabilitation before hopefully returning to the wild where she belongs.
