On Christmas Day, staff members at Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters received a stray cat unlike any they had ever seen before.
The large tabby arrived from local animal control with enormous cheeks, a tough expression and the kind of face that instantly made everyone laugh.
Shelter staff quickly nicknamed the cat Katpone because, as they joked online, he looked less like an ordinary stray and more like a furry mob boss who had spent years ruling alleyways behind dumpsters.
At around 15 pounds, Katpone’s massive face and thick jowls gave him the appearance of a hardened street veteran. But despite his intimidating look, rescuers quickly discovered something surprising about him.
He was incredibly affectionate.
The shelter team explained that Katpone’s oversized cheeks were likely caused by years of living unneutered on the streets. High testosterone levels in male cats can cause the skin and muscles around the face to thicken over time, especially in cats that have spent years fighting for territory and survival.
As adorable as his giant cheeks appeared, they were also signs of the difficult life he had endured.
Veterinarians soon discovered that Katpone had several health problems, including feline immunodeficiency virus, an upper respiratory infection and damaged ears likely caused by ear mites and past fights with other stray cats.
But through it all, the giant-faced tabby remained unbelievably sweet with everyone caring for him.
According to shelter workers, Katpone loved attention and quickly became a favorite among staff members, who couldn’t get enough of his hilarious appearance and gentle personality.
Over the following weeks, his condition steadily improved as he adjusted to life indoors and finally received proper medical care, food and comfort.
Now, the once-hardened street cat with the face of a “mob boss” is preparing for the next chapter of his life — finding a forever home where he can leave his rough past behind for good.
For the shelter team, Katpone ended up becoming one of the most unforgettable Christmas surprises they had ever received.
