An abandoned SUV sat untouched in an impound lot in Minnesota for weeks, blending in with dozens of other forgotten vehicles. Employees at a towing company assumed it was just another car waiting to be cleared out — until one day, everything changed.
While preparing the vehicle for demolition, workers opened the doors to clean out the inside. At first, they noticed random belongings scattered throughout the SUV: blankets, cloth and old boxes left behind.
Then they saw movement.

Curled up quietly in the back of the vehicle was a tiny elderly dog.
The frightened Chihuahua-dachshund mix slowly lifted his head and weakly wagged his tail, shocking everyone who discovered him. Somehow, he had survived inside the abandoned car the entire time.
Rescuers later believed the little dog had managed to stay alive by drinking small amounts of water and eating scraps of food left behind in the vehicle.

The towing company immediately contacted Pet Haven for help, and the dog — later named Otto — was rushed into rescue care.
Veterinarians quickly discovered Otto had been suffering for quite some time. His nails were severely overgrown, his teeth were badly decayed and he also had a small growth on his head requiring treatment.
Despite everything he had endured, Otto began adjusting surprisingly quickly once he entered foster care.

According to rescuers, the tiny dog immediately became attached to his foster family and constantly wanted to stay close to them. As he slowly regained strength, he even started showing interest in playing with another dog in the home — something rescuers described as incredibly heartwarming after what he had survived.
Otto is still recovering, but his life now looks completely different from the lonely days spent trapped inside that abandoned SUV.
For the first time in a long time, he no longer has to struggle alone. Rescuers say that from now on, Otto’s life will be filled only with safety, comfort and love.
